Web dominates for holiday purchases

About 90% of the people surveyed for CompareHolidayMoney.com researched their holiday online, while 80% booked online.

The survey of 361 people also found that eight out of ten used comparison sites to check currency, with four out of ten buying currency online.

The Family Travel Survey (FTS) was set up and administered by comparison website CompareHolidayMoney in partnership with online currency specialist FairFX.

Ian Strafford-Taylor, FairFX chief executive, said: ‘Budget airlines paved the way for the online revolution in the travel industry and it is clear now that consumers are going online to research all aspects of their holiday.

‘Consumers are realising that online companies are able to offer better deals than some of the big travel players, as they have none of the costly overheads that come with a having a presence on the high street.

‘Currency is a prime example of this and…we would expect over the next few years to see a further increase in people moving online.’

Other findings from the poll include that seven out of ten people book their holiday without using a tour operator, and the two most recognised consumer protection bodies in travel are ABTA and ATOL (Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing).

About 70% of holidays cost more than £1,500 and more than 30% cost over £2,500.

Also, the pre-paid currency card has replaced the traveller’s cheque as the main back-up to cash while on holiday.

And two in ten people did not know they could change foreign currency back into sterling when they got home, with most people keeping leftover cash to spend on a future holiday.
