United moving headquarters to USA's tallest buildingThe USA’s biggest airline is moving its headquarters into the USA’s tallest building. United Airlines announced today that it will move its headquarters into Chicago’s Willis Tower – formerly known as the Sears Tower – under a lease that would run through 2028, according to the Chicago Tribune. United has already moved its Network Operations Center to the building, with that facility becoming fully operational this past May. The Associated Press adds “once the airline’s corporate headquarters moves across Chicago’s Loop into Willis, officials say United will occupy approximately 25% of the 110-story building. The new deal means United will be leasing a total of 830,000 square feet at Willis, occupying 16 floors.” After completion of the new headquarters facilities, United will have more than 4,000 employees working in downtown Chicago and more than 14,000 total when its O’Hare operations and a nearby reservations center are included. “The fact that United has brought its company under one roof and extended their commitment to downtown is great news for all Chicagoans,” Mayor Emanuel says in a statement quoted by the Tribune. “This deal shows United’s commitment to Chicago for a generation; it ensures our hometown airline will be here, and means that quality jobs and economic activity will remain in the area for years to come.” At 1,450 feet, the Willis Tower is currently the tallest skyscraper in the United States, though honor is likely to shift to New York next year once the new World Trade Center tower is completed there. Similarly, United’s status as the USA’s biggest carrier could change as the climate for mergers heats up in the U.S. aviation industry. Share this article with your social network: |
